Citronella for Skin, Insects, and More: What Science Says

By Miiro Rio Akram Jun 25, 2025 109

Citronella is a fragrant oil made from grass in the  Cymbopogon family. People have used it for centuries, particularly in Asia and Africa, to treat infections, skin conditions, and promote overall well-being. Today, citronella is widely known as a mosquito repellent, but it does more than just keep bugs away.

We source our citronella directly from Uganda, where rich soils and a warm climate help produce some of the most potent and aromatic citronella in East Africa. This local sourcing supports small-scale farmers and ensures a pure, high-quality product you can trust.

Main Benefits of Citronella

Keeps Insects Away

Citronella oil helps repel mosquitoes. It works best when mixed with vanillin (from vanilla). One study has shown that this mix can protect you from bites for up to 3 hours. However, citronella does not last as long as DEET and needs to be reapplied often.

Fight Fungal Infections

Citronella oil can kill fungi like  Aspergillus niger , which may cause lung infections. It also helps fight  Candida albicans , a fungus that causes mouth and skin problems. For best results, daily use may be needed.

Supports Wound Healing

Animal studies show that citronella oil helps wounds heal faster, especially those infected by fungi. It works by reducing inflammation and fighting infection. More human studies are still going on, but early results are promising.

May Support Weight Control

Inhaling citronella oil reduced hunger and slowed weight gain in rats. It also helped lower cholesterol. There is no solid proof yet for humans, but the results are interesting.

Affects Mood and Energy

When inhaled, citronella oil affects the brain. Some people feel more relaxed, while others feel more alert. The effect may depend on the person.

How to Use Citronella Oil

Spray

Mix citronella oil with water in a spray bottle. Use about 10–15 drops per ounce of water. Shake before each use. Spray on skin or in rooms. Add a dispersing agent to help the oil mix better.

Diffuser

Add citronella oil to a diffuser to spread the scent around a room. This may help keep mosquitoes away or freshen the air.

Massage Oils and Lotions

Mix citronella oil with a carrier oil (like coconut or jojoba) or a plain lotion. Use 6–15 drops per ounce for normal skin, and 3–6 drops for sensitive skin. This helps with fungal skin infections and wound healing.

Safety Tips for Citronella Use

  • Never use citronella oil directly on the skin. Always dilute it.
  • Do not eat or drink citronella oil. It is toxic if swallowed.
  • Keep citronella oil away from children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medicine, ask a doctor before using it.
  • Watch for signs of an allergy: redness, itching, swelling, or rash. Do a small skin test first.
  • In rare cases, severe reactions like trouble breathing or chest tightness may occur. Seek help if this happens.

How to Choose Quality Citronella Oil

  • Look for the scientific name:  Cymbopogon nardus (Ceylon type) or  Cymbopogon winterianus (Java type).
  • Don’t confuse citronella with lemongrass ( Cymbopogon citratus ). They are different.
  • Buy oil stored in dark bottles to protect it from light damage. We offer high-quality citronella sourced from Uganda, where the favorable climate helps produce a rich and potent oil.
  • Avoid products with unclear ingredients. Check for a “100% pure essential oil” label.
  • If possible, smell the oil. Citronella has a fresh lemon-like scent.

Conclusion

Citronella oil is more than a bug repellent. It can help fight infections, speed healing, and even lift your mood. Use it as a spray, in a diffuser, or on your skin, but always dilute it and use it safely.

If you’re not sure if citronella oil is right for you, ask a doctor or health expert first. Done right, citronella can be a helpful and natural part of your wellness routine.
